When I first met Dima, a year ago, she was a second-year student at Dar al-Kalima University. As we sat in the brightly lit library, complete with energizing lime green floors and orange chairs I was struck by her passion and dedication to art and how effortlessly and comfortably she fits into the campus. Dima lives in Beit Jala, a town near Bethlehem, where she grew up and went to school. She shared that her love for art, especially oil painting, began early. "At 13, I started taking courses at the Diyar Academy. As soon as I entered the painting classes, I knew I had to pursue art," Dima explained, her eyes lighting up. When asked where she finds inspiration, she mentioned that she admires artists like Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, and Goya.
As Dima talked about her experience at DAK, her excitement was palpable. "The teachers here are incredible; they’ve helped me refine my skills and achieve my goals." She described how her professors helped nurture her creativity and encouraged her to explore various artistic mediums. Dima even ventured into makeup art for cinema, blending her love for painting with new artistic expressions.
Dima also shared the different support she receives as a woman. “Dar al-Kalima is one of the best universities to feel free to say whatever you want. It's a little bit more open-minded than other universities here at Bethlehem or in Palestine. And I feel appreciated and I feel happy here as a woman, as a student, as a Palestinian.” DAK has a significant focus on gender equity with women making up 62% of the student body, 75% of vice president positions, and 50% of overall staff.
Dima's dreams are big and bold. "I want to become a renowned painter, known for my unique style and contributions to contemporary art," she shared with a warm smile. Her journey at DAK has brought her closer to this goal, but achieving these dreams requires support. Generous donations can provide students like Dima with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. By supporting their education, you're investing in the next generation of creative leaders in Palestine. Dima's success is a testament to the impact your support makes.
